The author

Robert R. Shreck, MD

I am not a nutrition researcher. I am a cancer doctor who spent forty years telling other people what the evidence said, and then had to read it about myself.

Forty years in oncology

MD, University of Iowa College of Medicine, 1974. Internal medicine residency and a medical oncology fellowship at the University of Utah Medical Center. I practiced medical oncology full-time in central Iowa from 1979 until 2019.

I started solo in Des Moines in 1979. In 1981 I co-founded Medical Oncology & Hematology Associates with Tom Buroker — two oncologists in one office. It is now Mission: Cancer + Blood, with nineteen board-certified medical oncologists and forty-five nurse practitioners and physician assistants across five offices, plus outreach clinics in twenty-two county-seat towns.

I have held privileges at every private hospital in Des Moines and covered as replacement oncologist at the Des Moines Veterans Administration Hospital. Since 2019 I have been semi-retired — I still consult and cover at Mission, under the title Chief Visionary.

Before medicine

BS, University of Iowa, 1967. I went into the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1970, graduated Engineer Officer Candidate School as a first lieutenant, and served in Vietnam in 1969 and 1970. Medical school came after that.

Outside the practice

I established the pro-bono oncology clinic at Broadlawns Medical Center and attended it from 1979 to 2000 — twenty-one years of seeing patients who could not pay for an oncologist.

Since 2017 I have been the oncology representative on the Iowa Medical Cannabidiol Advisory Board.

What this book is not

Nobody has run a trial on LP3 as a whole, including me. What the book does is assemble the parts from studies that have been run, cite every one it draws on in the Notes at the back, and name the weakness in each.

The evidence page is the wider library: forty-two studies, including the patterns closest to this one that have been tested, a few the book never leans on, and a section of findings that argue against parts of this diet.

I still take cholesterol medication, and chapter one says so on the page. The book makes no claim to have reversed anything in me, because I have not had the scans that would support one.

I am not selling supplements, a subscription, or a coaching program. There are two things for sale here and they are the same book: the whole of it, or the cooking half on its own.

The part that is not on the CV

A heart scan warned me in the 1990s. I ran marathons instead, for twenty-five years, until my main coronary artery was ninety-eight percent blocked.
